Organ donation is a process of transplanting an organ or tissue from a dead person to a person suffering from end-stage organ failure. Living donation and donation after death are two types of donations explained below.
A living person can donate part of liver and a kidney when one’s alive. The person can donate his relatives without any official’s approval, whereas if the recipient is not from distant relation then they require approval from the State Authorization Committee.
This is a type of donation after the deceased natural death. Although organ donation is very common in West, in India only tissues, corneas (eyes), skin tissues can be donated and retrieved from the deceased residence and stored in banks. Moreover, bones, heart valves etc., could be retrieved through only clinical setting.
In this type a person is said to be ‘Brain dead’ when there is no consciousness and capacity on breathe on own due to absence of brain stem reflexes leading to traumatic injury to the brain. The cause of death could be due to brain tumor, brain hemorrhage, clot, or stroke. Coma a state of vegetation shouldn’t be mistaken as brain dead, as it has possible recovery. According to medical science, a brain dead person can save the life of 9 people through organ donation.
AS Charitable Trust have come up with the awareness program of organ donation that can lead to saving many lives. It is estimated that at least 15 patients die every day, waiting for organs, and in every 10 minutes a new name is added to the waiting list. Awareness program is only solution to get out of this depressing situation. The more availability of potential donors, the more lives could be saved.
